Child Development Permits
The School of Education offers an Early Childhood focused area of study within the context of a Liberal Studies, Elementary Education major. Upon completion of the required Early Childhood coursework, candidates will be eligible to apply for the California Child Development Assistant Permit and the Associate Teacher Permit with the option to add the School Age Emphasis Authorization to either permit. Application for the permit will be submitted to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing with Biola University’s formal recommendation.
Students completing the Liberal Studies, Elementary Education major, with the focused area of study in Early Childhood, can simultaneously earn the California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and an Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) Standard Educators Certificate, certifying them to teach preschool through adult in a self-contained classroom (see Teaching Credential information sheet for specific requirements).
Biola’s Child Development Permits, the Liberal Studies, Elementary Education major, and the Multiple Subject Teaching Credential program are all approved programs by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC).
Candidates completing the Early Childhood coursework, will enjoy hands-on experience in several local infant, toddler, and elementary-age educational settings during their required fieldwork assignments. The School of Education partners with local public and private schools to enable candidates to complete their fieldwork assignments and to advance their skills in working with young children.
The primary objective of the School of Education is to prepare the candidate with the broadest range of employability by preparing you to work with infants, toddlers, elementary age children, and adolescence within the context of a biblically-based education.
Focused Area of Study for Liberal Studies Majors
Every candidate in the Liberal Studies, Elementary Education major is required to select an approved 12 unit focused area of study from the following: Biology, Early Childhood, Human Development, Intercultural Studies, Mathematics, Physical Education, Spanish, US History, Visual Arts, or World History.
By completing the Early Childhood focused area of study and LEDU335 Child Development: Birth through Adolescence, candidates will meet their major’s requirements and be eligible to apply for Child Development certification. Early Childhood focused area of study coursework includes:
