Phil Johnson
Phillip E. Johnson, author and retired UC Berkeley law professor, is the Torrey Honors Institute's first "Visiting Professor/Scholar in Residence." He is best known for his books critiquing evolution, including Darwin on Trial and Reason in the Balance.
Johnson will lecture several times to Torrey students on the major issues of cultural transformation, such as the Intelligent Design movement. "I'll be giving the students a sense of how this program to make the gospel alive in the intellectual world is done," he said. "My goal is to give them a model of Christian witness in the intellectual world."
Johnson has been a supporter of Biola for many years. He helped secure the funding to launch Torrey in 1996. He has also volunteered to promote Biola through speaking engagements during his stays in La Mirada. "I want to help get the message out to people that there are some exciting things happening at Biola that they ought to support," he said.
Phillip E. Johnson is Professor Emeritus of Law at the University of California at Berkeley and a visiting Professor at the Torrey Honor's Institute at Biola University. He has taught at Emory University School of Law and University College in London, England. His areas of expertise include Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Professional Responsibility, and Contemporary Legal Theory. He is also the author of numerous books on science, philosophy and religion including Darwin on Trial, Reason in the Balance, and Defeating Darwinism.
