The strength of Biola's piano department is in its faculty and
its students. Headed by Dr. Li-shan Hung, the piano department's
faculty are active concert pianists, involved in both solo and
chamber music performance. Because of the quality of its program,
the department has attracted a large number of serious and well-qualified
piano majors pursuing the Bachelor of Music in Performance, Bachelor
of Music in Music Education and the Bachelor of Arts degree in
piano.
Students have opportunity to perform standard solo literature,
play in chamber ensembles, and accompany vocalists and instrumentalists.
Each semester the piano department invites internationally known
pianists to our campus to speak, perform, and give masterclasses.
Menahem Pressler, world-renowned pianist and founder of the Beaux
Arts Trio, is Biola University's Artist-in-Residence, coming at
least once a year to perform and to hold masterclasses. Other frequent
guest pianists include Howard Karp, professor of music at the University
of Wisoconsin/Madison and Bela Siki, Professor of Piano Emeritus
at the University of Washington.
Biola University piano students also have ample opportunity to
participate in competitions both on and off campus. Twice a year,
the piano department holds solo competitions, the winners of which
are given additional music scholarships. Also each year, a concerto
competition is held, the winner being given the honor of performing
in concert with the Biola Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to studio lessons, the curriculum includes piano-related
courses such as piano pedagogy, piano literature, and piano performance
seminar, as well as informal classes and workshops such as piano
"talkshop." Through these experiences, students learn
not only how to develop their technical and interpretive skills,
but also to develop their knowledge of solo and chamber repertoire,
as well as developing their ability to be strong teachers.
Our graduates have auditioned successfully at some of the best
graduate schools in the country, including Indiana University, the
Eastman School of Music, Penn State University, the University of
Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Northwestern University.
