Unique and exciting opportunities
can be yours as a singer in the Biola University Conservatory
of Music. All singers
have the opportunity to study privately with one of our highly
respected teachers, each of whom is an active performer with many
years of teaching experience. In addition, weekly group study
in the form of a voice workshop, participation in one or more
of several outstanding choral ensembles, and the opportunity to
be a part of a dynamic opera workshop program are all part of
the singer's exhilarating experience at Biola.
Our atmosphere, which acknowledges the Lordship of Christ in the
life of a Christian and the stewardship of one's musical talent
in the worship of God, will encourage the growth of the whole
person: spiritual, intellectual and social, as well as musical.
The young singer at Biola University has many available opportunities
to develop strong vocal and musical interpretation skills. Those
who are vocal performance majors have one hour of private instruction
each week, four semesters of language diction and grammar study
(including the study of Italian, French, German, and Spanish), two
semesters of song literature, and additional studies in vocal pedagogy.
Those voice emphasis students pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree
in Music Education or a Bachelor of Arts degree have a minimum of
one-half hour private instruction each week. All studies employ
classical literature in order that each student will become skillful
in interpreting various song styles.
In addition to private instruction, weekly group instruction is
scheduled in the form of a voice workshop. Each student, along with
the accompanist provided in private lessons, performs for the entire
group of vocal emphasis students. Moreover, voice students are offered
the special opportunity to perform in a masterclass for such outstanding
well-known singers as Russia's leading baritone, Leonid Smetannikov,
and Biola alumnus and Metropolitan Opera singer, Earl Patriarco.
Furthermore, solo singers may be invited to perform on the New Music
Ensemble concert, the Faculty Composers' concert, the Opera Workshop,
with the orchestra on the Concerto concert or in performances of
the several choral ensembles.
The Biola University Opera Theater, under the capable direction
of Dr. Jeanne Robison, provides superb opportunities for singer-actors
to perform operatic scenes, complete operas and musicals. Recent
outstanding performances of the operas Cosi fan Tutte, The Marriage
of Figaro, and The Magic Flute by Mozart, and entertaining scenes
from operas by Puccini were well received. These performances
were noted for their excellence in attention to the details of
acting, staging, costumes, sets and musical interpretation.
