 CROSSROADS - Jazz
The Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Cliff Hulling, released its first recording in September, 2004. The album, entitled Crossroads, was produced by Will Kennedy, noted percussionist formerly with the “Yellowjackets,” and features the Conservatory Jazz Ensemble and some of LA’s finest jazz musicians, including Justo Almario, Russell Ferrante, Harry Kim, Rique Pantoja, to name just a few.  The Conservatory is indebted to Mr. Kennedy for assembling such an outstanding array of soloists. The recording provided a tremendous opportunity for Conservatory students to work with outstanding professionals in the field.  Pieces on the CD include an arrangement by Rique Pantoja of the Doxology, featuring Judith Hill, vocalist and Conservatory student; Duke Ellington’s, Take the “A” Train, and   Sammy   Nestico’s   classic  arrangement of Ya Gotta Try...Harder.

 CROSSCURRENTS - Original Compositions
Crosscurrents is a collection of works by the Conservatory’s own composition faculty. This recording features works by John Browning, Cliff Hulling and Neil Argo. The recording opens with a rousing wind arrangement of the theme to the popular television show “Wild America,”  originally composed by Neil Argo for the PBS series. Also featured are other instrumental works, including the evanescent Sonatine d’Azur for flute and piano performed by the composer, John Browning, on the piano, and Gary Woodward,  principal flute for the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra and Conservatory faculty member. Cliff Hulling is featured in The Journey, performed by the Conservatory Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of the composer. In addition, the recording includes other works that demonstrate the compositional breadth and ability of this trio of gifted composers.

 CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC COLLECTION
The Conservatory of Music faculty and student ensembles summon a delightful compilation of musical selections in this recording. Works range from the radiant Lord of the Dance, to the spirited "Allegro" from Beethoven's G major string trio; from the steely angularity of Frank Ticheli's Vesuvius, to the delightfully whimsical Sweet Georgia Brown; from the breathtaking vitality of The Journey, written by Biola's own Cliff Hulling, to J.S. Bach's captivatingly luminous Double violin Concerto. Whether your tastes lie in vocal, keyboard, or instrumental music, there is something for everyone in this collection. ENJOY!

NEW CENTURY DAWN - Symphonic Winds
Under the direction of Robert G. Feller, the Biola Symphonic Winds has recorded several very special compositions. New Century Dawn is a celebratory fanfare and chorale for winds and percussion, by Gillingham. The work is intended to evoke feelings of anticipation and optimism about the advent of the Millennium. With his composition October, Eric Whitacre has written a lush and beautiful piece evoking crisp autumn air and subtle change of light. Cuban Overture, by George Gershwin, expresses the composer's fascination with the native music of Cuba, which he experienced during a vacation to Havana. The final composition, Third Symphony, by Barnes, was commissioned by the United States Air Force Band in Washing D.C. Written during a time of grief over the death of his baby daughter, Natalie, Barnes moves from the darkness of despair all the way to the brightness of fulfillment and joy. The finale movement represents a rebirth of spirit, a reconciliation for us all. The second theme of the last movement is based on an old Lutheran children's hymn called "I am Jesus' Little Lamb."
