GERMAN-MADE VIOLIN DONATED TO CONSERVATORY

Mrs. Virginia Moats has donated to the Conservatory a Reichers violin and Tourte bow that belonged to her father, Carl Mueller (1887 - 1918).  The German violinmaker August Reichers constructed the violin around the turn of the 20th century.

Mrs. Moats shared, “For many years Papa’s violin was a treasured keepsake of my father’s love of music.  He died when I was only 5 so I do not recall hearing him play the beautiful music my mother loved.  I loved hearing Mama tell how once she asked him if he didn’t think he needed a new violin case, as the old black leather one was crumbly with age.  Papa, she said, smiled and replied, ‘Josephine dear, do you want everyone to think I’m a beginner?’  The years have passed and Papa’s violin is over a century old and way past time for it to make beautiful music again.  Loving Biola with its great heritage, and desire to serve God, and loving the young students there who desire to honor Him with their gifts through music, I knew that was where Papa’s violin should make beautiful music once again.”

The violin will be made available to deserving Biola students in need of an instrument in order to participate in orchestra or chamber groups. The violin is currently being used by Yohan Shin (’07), sophomore violin major from Budapest, Hungary, while repairs are being made to his own instrument.
