Each year the Conservatory of Music holds several master class
sessions with major performing artists, and 2003/04 was no exception. These
sessions prove to be some of the most valuable experiences students
have during their time at Biola. Below, we feature our two
Artist-in-Residence, who come every year to encourage Conservtory
students to excellence.
Menahem Pressler, Artist-in-Residence
Well known and inspiring to piano students around the world, Menahem
Pressler returned in the Spring to present two days of master
classes for piano and chamber ensembles. Mr. Pressler has been
Artist-in-Residence at Biola since 1993. Since his spectacular
five-concert debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Eugene
Ormandy in 1948, this legendary pianist and teacher has appeared with almost
every major orchestra in the world, and is well known for his work with the world
renowned Beaux Arts Trio. While at Biola this year, he also performed Shostakovich’s Concerto
#1 in C Minor for piano, trumpet and strings, Op. 35, with the
Biola Symphony Orchestra, Marlin Owen, conductor; Robert Feller, trumpet, as
well as Schubert’s Trout Quintet, with Mary Beth Woodruff, violin;
Marlin Owen, cello; Artist-in-Residence Basil Vendryes, viola; and Maren Reck,
bass.
Basil Vendryes, Artist-in-Residence
Violist Basil Vendryes, Artist-in-Residence at Biola since 2001,
presented four master classes this year: two for chamber music,
one for violin, and one for viola. When not challenging students
to their best, Mr. Vendryes is Principal Violist of the Colorado
Symphony Orchestra. He has also been a member of the San Francisco
Symphony, New York Philharmonic, and the Rochester Philharmonic
orchestras. As violist with the Aurora String Quartet (1986 - 95),
Mr. Vendryes performed extensively, including recitals in New
York, London and Tokyo. He often joins in performances with our
own outstanding faculty members, Mary Beth Woodruff, violin,
and Marlin Owen, cello. Currently, Mr. Vendryes is on the faculties
of the Lamont School of Music of the University of Denver, where
he teaches both viola and chamber music, and California Summer
Music in Pebble Beach. He has recorded for CRI and Naxos labels.
