Sponsored by the Canadian Alumni Board, the Biola Honors String
Quartet, accompanied by Mary Beth Woodruff, assistant professor
of violin, performed in and around Vancouver, Canada in November.
The tour included performances at the Vancouver Public Library
and three Vancouver area Christian high schools. In addition, the
quartet performed in a concert featuring string students from Calvin
Dyck’s (Conservatory alumnus, ‘85) teaching studio,
and provided music ministry at First Baptist Church of Vancouver.
The quartet performed works by Schubert, Shostakovich, Ravel, Haydn,
and Smetana.
The current members of the quartet are Davina Hong, Yohan Shin,
Karla West, and Denika Lam. Davina is from Kansas City, and is
currently applying to graduate programs in violin. Denika is a
senior cello performance major from southern California. Yohan
is a freshman violin performance major from Hungary, where his
parents are missionaries. Karla (Conservatory alumna, ‘02),
originally from the Vancouver area, is serving as a teaching assistant
to Professor Woodruff, while her husband completes graduate studies
at the Talbot School of Theology. She, too, is currently applying
for graduate studies in viola.
The Honors Quartet performs annually around the greater Los Angeles
area in a variety of venues including churches and private and
public elementary, junior high and high schools. The quartet serves
to encourage young musicians, both in the Christian church and
wider artistic community, to pursue excellence in the study of
stringed instruments and chamber music.
