The Biola Chorale, under the direction of Shawna Stewart, and the Fullerton Choir, under the direction of John Tebay, performed a joint concert on Saturday, October 27, 2007. The 100+ voice Fullerton Choir selections included works by Holst, Bach, Tebay, and Berg. The Biola Chorale performed selections from their Spring 2008 European Tour repertoire, which included works by Byrd, Whitacre, and Rutter.
In an effort to raise funds for their upcoming tour, The Chorale hosted a Silent Auction prior to the concert. They also partnered with a Whittier food bank and sold Thanksgiving Food Baskets to help those in need.
The Biola University Chorale is comprised of fifty-three voices from various disciplines on campus, with nearly sixty-five percent being voice majors. The Chorale participates yearly in the prestigious Southern California festivals such as the PSICA, Chapman University, and Pacific Chorale Invitational Choral Festivals. They are also the hosts for an annual two-day invitational high school, community, and Christian college festival in early November. They join forces with the Biola Symphony Orchestra each spring for a choral-orchestral concert. Recent works performed include Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Poulenc’s Gloria, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Verdi’s Requiem, and Mozart’s “Coronation” Mass in C Major. Recent annual tours include Colorado, Northern and Southern CA, Washington, Oregon, Washington D.C., New York City, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Italy. In addition to a yearly season of many Biola-related concerts, the Chorale also performs at area churches which have included the Crystal Cathedral, Lake Avenue Congregational Church, and Hollywood Presbyterian Church. The choir has also been seen on the Tonight Show, with Jay Leno, performing the music of the movie the Passion of the Christ. |
