The mission of Biola University Department of Nursing is to prepare students to be competent nursing professionals who integrate Christian caring into their nursing practice.
The Department of Nursing offers the unique advantage of having grown out of the School of Missionary Medicine. In keeping with this strong heritage, students are taught to view nursing as a ministry wherever they choose to serve. Emphasis on missions and summer ministry opportunities continues.
The Department of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, accredited by the California Board of Registered Nursing and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Graduates of Biola’s nursing program are eligible for certification as public health nurses and for licensure as registered nurses.
We are very enthusiastic about the educational benefits to our nursing students as a result of the patient simulation experience that is now being incorporated into clinical time. Simulation technology is an alternative teaching paradigm facilitating the shift from a teacher-centered to a learner-centered experience.
High fidelity simulation allows students to practice assessment, critical thinking skills and decision making/problemsolving in a non-threatening environment with no risk to the patient. In addition, faculty can create clinical scenarios tailored to theory content, that provide specific experiences that students may not otherwise be exposed to in the clinical facility.
We are so grateful that God has allowed us this new dimension of the learning experience for our nursing students. Although still in its infancy stages, we foresee being able to use simulation across the curriculum, enabling students to progress as active learners in this new arena of nursing education.
