Sarah Lum

Biochemistry, B.S. '14

I utilized the same critical thinking in philosophical and theological texts as I did with scientific theories and evidence and found them all complementary in leading me closer to the incredible beauty and wonder of our God.

How did your program at Biola prepare you for your career?

The small class size meant individualized academic attention and more importantly, a relationship with professors whose passion for serving the Lord through their work inspired students to excellence. The science department at Biola encouraged students to get involved with tutoring, student teaching and research - all necessary experiences to have when pursuing graduate work.

What did you appreciate most about your time at Biola?

The Christ-centered community. Coming from a public education background, this was the first time I was surrounded with peers who also passionately desired a deeper relationship with God. We were able to encourage one another and build friendships that surpass discipline-specific or geographical boundaries!

How did Biola equip you to be a more faithful follower of Jesus Christ?

Torrey Honors College was an excellent place for spiritual, mental and interpersonal development in a way that encourages students to delve into meaningful discussion on issues that matter as they seek Truth. We are called to work at all things as working for the Lord (Col. 3:23), becoming an expert in our field and through this, shine the light of Christ in our spheres of influence (Mat. 5:16). A holistic education, which for me was partnering biochemistry with Torrey, allowed me to seek Truth in my studies and discussions. I utilized the same critical thinking in philosophical and theological texts as I did with scientific theories and evidence and found them all complementary in leading me closer to the incredible beauty and wonder of our God.

What advice would you give to students considering your degree program?

  1. Take advantage of office hours - not just for academic advice, but to get to know your professors and let them get to know you personally! They all have awesome stories, as do you, and at Biola, they are interested in knowing you as a whole person, not just another number in their class.
  2. Get involved! Join ACS. Become a tutor or teaching assistant. Submit an ornament to the Chemistree. Sing at Science Chapel. This is great community to get involved in. What you put in is what you get out!
  3. If you're interested in pursuing a graduate degree, then it's never too early to get involved in research! Can't find a project that interests you? Ask a professor for a Special Topics in Chemistry/Physics/Biology course - they can actually design a credited course just for you and give you an opportunity to study a field you're interested in.
