Paid Leave

Biola University offers paid leave, such as vacations, holidays, short workdays, birthday and service anniversary leave, sick leave and more. Learn more about each by reading the summary below.

Vacations

Upon hire, non-exempt employees accrue 10 days of vacation per year. At five years of service, non-exempt employees accrue 15 days of vacation per year. At 15 years of service, non-exempt employees accrue 20 days of vacation time per year.

Exempt employees accrue 15 days of vacation per year. At 15 years of service, exempt employees accrue 20 days of vacation. Vacation time is accrued from the date of hire and may be taken as it is accrued.

Holidays

Regular employees who work a minimum of 20 or more hours per week, for at least 10 months per year, are eligible for holiday pay. Instead of working, you will be paid your regular rate of pay on all observed holidays. Holiday pay is prorated for employees working less than 40 hours per week, based on the number of hours they are scheduled to work per week.

  • New Year's Day
  • Martin Luther King Day
  • Good Friday
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Day After Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Day
  • Day Before and After Christmas
  • Third Day at Christmas

Short Workdays

Short days are workdays that are designated at the beginning of each fiscal year where employees may leave work early, but get paid for their full workday. These paid hours off are the equivalent of approximately 7 1/2 whole days off.

Personal Birthday & Service Anniversary Leave

Biola grants Personal Birthday and Service Anniversary leave to all regular staff employees who work at least 20 hours per week, for at least 10 months of the year in celebration of the employee’s birthday and in honor of service to the University. The accrual rate will be prorated for employees who work less than full-time. Personal Birthday and Service Anniversary leave can be used in conjunction with vacation or holiday time off.

Sick Leave

Non-exempt employees accrue one day of sick leave per month. Exempt employees are granted 12 days of sick leave upon hire and accrue one day per month. Both non-exempt and exempt employees may accrue up to 60 days. Up to six days a year may be used to care for sick immediate family members.

Voting Leave

If an employee who is a registered voter does not have sufficient time outside of working hours to vote, they will be allotted time off of work to vote in statewide primary and general elections. Up to two hours of absence will be paid.

Bereavement

Time will be granted with pay to cover absence from work from the day of passing to the day following the funeral for close family members.
