Athletic Teams Honored for Academics
Biola athletics stood above the rest this year on the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Scholar Teams list with 14 teams honored for cumulatively earning a 3.0 grade point average or higher. Each year the NAIA recognizes athletic teams in the division that achieve a 3.0 GPA or higher as a team based on a 4.0 scale.
Biola Sports Information Director, Jeff Hoffman said this shows Biola’s athletes are serious about sports and academics.
“One of the big issues with most college sports is that the athletes are just there to play sports and not to get an education,” said Hoffman. “Fourteen of our teams had a cumulative GPA of 3.0 during their season meaning our student-athletes are good students and good athletes.”
There are approximately 300 schools in the NAIA with at least six sports, which makes the number of eligible teams high. This year, there were 750 teams honored. In the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC), there are 11 schools with over 150 teams. Only 60 of the 150 teams earned recognition, which included Biola’s teams.
