Biola University Hosts Los Angeles Residents to Help Write the Bible

The Bible Across America tour arrived at Biola on Monday, February 16.

More than 31,000 Americans will have a hand in publishing a new Bible – America’s NIV – the first NIV Bible ever written “one-verse, one-person” at a time.  The cross-country tour stopped at Biola University on Monday, February 16, 2009 when the 42-foot Bible Across America RV rolled into La Mirada.

The public was invited to come out and contribute a verse in their own handwriting between the hours of 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. in front of Marshburn Hall. The rain on Monday didn’t keep La Mirada residents from traveling to campus for the historic event and students and staff were eager to write a verse in their own handwriting, so much so, the manuscripts and pens remained out until almost 7:30 p.m. when the line didn’t die down at 6 p.m.

Bible Across America will reach 90 cities in 44 states during the six-month tour to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible.  The NIV is the most popular modern English Bible translation and has more than 300 million copies in print worldwide.

By the time the RV arrived at Biola, Bible Across America had received nearly 15,000 hand-written verses. The final America’s NIV will have an unprecedented index of 31,173 contributors, one for every verse of the Bible. It will be reproduced and published by Zondervan, the world’s leading Bible publisher, and then distributed nationwide and sold in bookstores.  The original manuscripts will be bound and offered to the Smithsonian Institution.

More information on the tour, including real time GPS tracking of the RV, can be found at www.BibleAcrossAmerica.com.
