OPT for F-1 Students

Optional practical training (OPT) is defined in the regulations as “temporary employment for practical training directly related to the student’s major area of study.” Title 8 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 214.2(f)(10)(ii).

  • OPT after completion of the course of study will only be granted for full-time use. Students must apply for post-completion optional practical training before the completion date of their course of study.
  • Work done for OPT must be directly related to the student’s major field of study.
  • Student cannot begin employment until the Employment Authorization Document is actually received and the start date on the card has been reached.
  • Optional practical training can be authorized for a maximum aggregate period of 12 months per educational level. A student becomes eligible for another 12 months of practical training when he or she changes to a higher educational level.
  • The regulations state that “authorization to engage in practical training employment is automatically terminated when the student transfers to another school or begins study at another educational level.”
  • Post-completion OPT must be completed within a 14-month period following the completion of study.
  • The advisor is the person who recommends the student for OPT to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). It is wise to apply on time (at least 3-4 months before graduation) and students may anticipate wide variation in USCIS processing times for work permits. Delays are very common.
  • While doing post-completion optional practical training, the student must keep the immigration advisor in the Office of the Registrar informed of any name or address changes and any decision to terminate the employment early before the due date.
