Women’s Volleyball
The ladies rounded out their phenomenal 30–6 season with a 12-game win streak, a run that concluded in Biola’s second straight title at the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Championships. In PacWest play, the Eagles went 19–3, improving upon last season’s 15–5 record to narrowly finish in second place. The Eagles took home a thrilling 3–2 comeback win at home over longtime rival Azusa Pacific University, with senior middle blocker Sierra Bauder putting up big numbers in kills and blocks. Bauder, who led the team with 410 points on the season, was named PacWest Player of the Year and was Biola’s first-ever NCAA Division II All-American athlete.
Men’s Golf
Men’s golf began its final season in fine fashion, completing its fall portion of the schedule with a team scoring average of 303.78, which would be a program record if the student-athletes can hold it through the end of the season. Their fall season was highlighted by a trip to Hawaii to compete at the Dennis Rose Invitational, where the men shot three rounds below 310 in a strong effort paced by Austin Bishop and Kyle McAbee. Following the publishing of this issue of Biola Magazine, the men will participate in three tournaments leading up to the PacWest Championship.
Women’s Golf
Yet another championship rolled in for the Eagles, as women’s golf won the NCCAA title by a staggering 22 strokes. Freshman standout Sami Penor was crucial to the team’s success, edging out the rest of the field to finish as the tournament’s top golfer. Biola was guided to the championship by head coach Jane Carr, who was named the NCCAA Coach of the Year. Four golfers were named NCCAA All-Americans after the fall section of the Eagles’ season, in which they placed first in three of their four meets. Following the publishing of this issue of Biola Magazine, the ladies will participate in four tournaments leading up to the PacWest Championship.
Women’s Soccer
Women’s soccer finished with an even record, going 7–7–4 on the season. Junior co-captain Hali Oakes led the team in minutes played, guiding the Eagles to a winning 5–4–2 record in PacWest competition. Junior forwards Sarah Jeffries and Annmarie Alvarez split the season’s goal-scoring responsibilities, grabbing six goals each. In the first of two close games versus Concordia University Irvine, there was nothing to separate the two teams, as they remained tied in double overtime. However, in the second meeting, Biola came out ahead with a hard-fought 3–2 win.
Men’s Soccer
Men’s soccer matched last season’s performance with an 8–8–2 record. The Eagles finished the season on a strong note, winning the last two games to end PacWest play with a 6–4–1 record. Senior co-captain midfielder Kousei Mattox propelled the team to a huge 3–2 victory over Northwest Nazarene University at home, scoring from outside the box to break the tie as the clock expired. In his first season, junior forward Leo Thompson led Biola with 11 goals scored. Junior Jake Munivez was a rock in the center of the defense, logging 1,629 minutes and starting all 18 games.
Cross Country
In a standout season, the men’s and women’s cross country teams combined to win two NCCAA Championships in Point Lookout, Mo. The men took home Biola’s first-ever PacWest team title in Fresno, Calif., finishing out a dominant season in which they placed first in six out of their seven meets. The women consistently challenged for spots on the podium, placing third or better in all but one meet. Individual performances from junior Gabe Plendcio, PacWest Runner of the Year, and sophomore Mackenna Mason led the team to a total of 10 all-conference runners. The accolades didn’t stop with the athletes, though, as head coach Sean Henning was named the PacWest Conference Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year.
