Matthew Weathers, Biola University professor of mathematics, has been deemed as the “Best Math Teacher Ever,” in the social media realm by those who have viewed and reposted his lighthearted Halloween themed video online, originally created for his Nature of Mathematics class in October. Less than two weeks after posting the video onto Weather’s YouTube channel, the video has received almost 1,000,000 views combined on YouTube and 23 social media sites have linked to his video.
“I was surprised by the response,” Weathers said. “I think one reason people like it is because it makes fun of the distinction between video and real life. The way we interact with media and video is something our culture hasn’t quite figured out yet, and the video plays with those boundaries.”
The video made the Digg Reel on Digg.com, a site that aggregates current online popular content, where 6,333 people “digged” Weather’s video and was the “Top Digg” the week after Halloween. The Chronicle of Higher Education also recognized Weathers Math Class video by posting it on their blog, with the header “Who Says Math Class Is No Fun?”
He previously made an April Fools video and decided to try his hand at film editing once more. Little did he know, how positive of a response he would get in return with more than 700 comments on his video, mostly positive. The class, a general education math course, was entertained as you could hear laughter in the background of the video, which was played in the last five minutes of class.
