Tim Muehlhoff, Associate Professor of communication at Biola University and author of Authentic Communication, appeared on Prime Time America radio show with Tracy Haney to discuss the art of communication on April 28, 2010.
In his new book, Authentic Communication, Muehlhoff aims to assist communication students to challenge the “naturalness of communication.”
During the interview Muehlhoff said communication and its impact are often taken for granted.
“If you’re flipping through the news channels on cable or wherever, you see that people are very angry at each other and talking about very important issues,” says Muehlhoff. “We seldom get nuance views and seldom understand our words have deep impact upon people and can really hurt.”
He describes communication as a process–how a person arrives at a conclusion may be even more important than the conclusion itself. Muehlhoff said people give their conclusion but seldom give their process of arrival at that conclusion.
Authentic Communication strives to rediscover the basics of good communication, hoping to bring this lost art back to life.
As communication is present throughout our lives, the need for good and healthy communication is significant. Muehlhoff explained that authentic communication is the process of choosing words carefully through the help of the Holy Spirit.
“Peter picks this up in 1 Peter 3:9. He says I do not want you to respond to an insult with an insult. We would think it would be good enough if we get hit with an insult and we just won’t respond with an insult,” said Muehlhoff. “But Peter says I want you to bless that person. We look at it and say that I can’t do that. But Peter says your right, you can’t do that, but the Spirit working through you can.”
