Cloudy skies and the occasional rain did not dampen the fun experienced on campus during our third annual Grandparents Day. Guests from 20 states and Canada traveled to La Mirada for the opportunity to spend a day in the life of their Biola grandchild. The day kicked off with a brunch on Metzger lawn where President Corey welcomed our guests, recognized the veterans who were present, and interviewed a grandfather, Rev. Dr. Peter Haile, who came all the way from Connecticut to be with his grandson Peter. Three grandparents who were celebrating birthdays on Friday received a special Biola gift from the Bookstore and enjoyed the sound of 800 individuals singing Happy Birthday!
Despite a few sprinkles of rain, several hundred grandparents and students enjoyed golf cart rides throughout campus, scheduled in between eating lunch in the Cafe and attending a seminar developed by professors especially for this day. For the 30 plus grandparents who enjoy a little competition, they and their grandkids played several games of Bocce Ball (or Lawn Bowling) under a tent on the lawn. The participants had so much fun, we expect to continue this activity in the future!
Once again the four seminars offered to grandparents were filled to capacity. Over 70 guests enjoyed seeing where the Cinema and Media Arts students edit and produce their work, while just as many had a lesson on computer basics or a pictorial telling of the church reformation in Geneva, Switzerland. From all appearance, grandparents enjoy the chance to learn from their students' professors so we hope to provide even more seminar opportunities next year!
Blue skies topped off the day as grandparents and students gathered one more time on Metzger lawn to enjoy a concert by Biola's Vocal Jazz and Jazz Quintet groups. Listening to the smooth sounds of classic jazz while enjoying a cup of coffee with cookies was an excellent end to a very fun day.
