The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) has ranked 6th Street PR, Biola’s student-run public relations firm, among what the PRSSA calls the “upper echelon” of student PR agencies throughout the nation.
In Biola’s Journalism and Integrated Media department, actual work experience and educational studies go hand-in-hand. The 6th Street PR, is one of the educational arms of the department.
“Biola's PR Program [is] on the same playing field as many secular programs around the country,” said Agency Director Johannah Sorenson, “Although we are a class, we run as an agency with a leadership team.”
Formed in fall of 2010, the group has already worked with several national and global clients including the Evangelical Christian Credit Union (ECCU), World Vision, Mercy Ships, and Union Rescue Mission. The student-run public relations agency offers full-service branding, creative strategizing, digital communication planning, designing and event planning to its clients.
“The mission of 6th Street PR is to provide clients with excellent public relations services that are developed and executed with the highest creative, professional, and ethical standards within the PR industry,” said Carolyn Kim, professor of Public Relations and Corporate Communications.
Kim played an instrumental role in the formation of the group. She and other journalism students brainstormed the name for their PR firm and decided on 6th Street PR. The name carries historical significance since it refers to Biola University’s original location on 6th Street and Hope St. in downtown Los Angeles.
Biola’s PR agency is among other schools with notable student-run PR agencies including the University of Florida, Syracuse University, Ohio State, and Chapman University. PRSSA’s list of nationally affiliated firms can be found here.
