The Alumni Association hosted our first Experience Los Angeles tour on February 16, 2013.  The sold-out tour, sponsored by Alumni Relations and the Vice Provost of Multi Ethnic and Cross Cultural Engagement, began early from Biola with a hot breakfast and then on the bus to Los Angeles. 

The 30 minute drive down the freeway began our day long visit to four unique and enlightening sites.  First stop was the Hollenbeck House.  Owners Larry and Nikki smith shared their vision for planting students in the inner city to live and explore.  Located in Boyle Heights the house provides access to L.A. history, culture and communities.  We heard first hand from students of the house as we worshiped and prayed together for the city. 

Next stop Little Tokyo, where we toured the Japanese American Culture Center and learned about the arrival, growth, war internment, and future aspirations of Japanese Americans.  After the tour, we experienced lunch in our choice of restaurants in the neighborhood.  I chose the Japanese Buffet, which was delicious! 

Third stop on the tour was Koreatown, and Emmanuel Presbyterian Church.  Emmanuel Presbyterian is a beautiful, historical, church in the heart of the city, whose 100 year old stain glass windows bring majesty and glory to God.  We wrapped up our time in Leimert Park with its Afrocentric art and history, and the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center, where Barbara and her band gave a private concert of blues and Jazz and we were treated to a selection of local deserts!
