The week dedicated to celebrating Biola's 105th birthday kicked off on Sunday, February 17 with a movie showing of Space Jam in the Andrews Banquet Room, sponsored by AS. Close to 80 students, including prospective students visiting for Spring Preview Day, were in attendance.
Catch Me If You Can, a game of strategy amongst over 200 participating students, began on Monday. Monday also marked the start of the Spirit Week Tweet Hunt, with twelve clues given by following @biolau on Twitter and approximately 75 students participating in at least one clue. Both concluded on Founder's Day, the next Monday, February 25 and winners were awarded with great prizes: The Catch Me If You Can Prize was an AS VIP Pass including two front row seats to Mock Rock, two tickets to Spring Banquet and two tickets to a Biola Live event. The Tweet Hunt Prize was a framed picture of President Corey along with a private lunch with two friends and the President!
On Tuesday and Wednesday of Spirit Week, Club Fair highlighted participating clubs on campus with tables stretching from the Biola Cafe to the Bell Tower. AS hosted an Art Shuttle to Downtown LA and MOCA on Thursday, February 21, which departed in the afternoon from Calvary Chapel.
Friday morning's chapel in the gym was the site of the annual Alumni Awards Chapel. Nominated Alumni were reviewed by the President's Administrative Council and the Alumni Board and chosen to receive the following awards: Lifetime Achievement Award -- Dr. Glen Thomas (1968), Legacy Award -- Dr. Samuel Philip Sutherland (1954), Cultural Impact Award -- Jonalyn Fincher (2003), Young Alumni Award -- Samantha Payne (2009), Alumni Stewardship Award --The Andrews Family, Clyde Cook Missions Award -- The Volkhardt Family. Congratulations to each of the recipients!
The Biola Block Party was held outside Chase Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 23. Block Party festivities included a BBQ dinner, a live DJ, free popcorn, cotton candy, and cupcakes, a Taiko drum performance, and the Biola Women's and Men's basketball games against Westmont. The Presidents Circle also hosted a dinner by the Fireplace Pavilion in conjunction with the Block Party.
During the Founder's Day chapel on Monday, February 25, President Corey unveiled a new addition to Biola's campus and the 2013 Senior Class Gift, a replica of the historic Jesus Saves Signs to be installed on top of the parking structure. The neon red lights of the sign will be turned on for the first time at the Spring 2013 Commencement Ceremonies on May 24, 2013.
Following chapel, 105th Birthday donuts and coffee were provided to all at the Fireplace Pavillion and the new Prayer Walk was unveiled. Monday afternoon, students and staff enjoyed the Lunch & Learn with Paul Rood in the Cafe Banquet Room and the Ken Bascom Exhibit Opening Event took place in the Heritage Room of the Library.
