For the first time in Biola University’s history, a baroness addressed graduates at the 2015 Spring Commencement ceremonies. Approximately 227 graduate and 725 undergraduate students received their diplomas on May 22, 2015. 

The Baroness Caroline Cox of Queensbury, a noblewoman of the British House of Lords, addressed graduates at their respective ceremonies. Baroness Cox is heavily involved in humanitarian aid. She is the founder and CEO of Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART), which combines aid with advocacy, working for people suffering from oppression, exploitation and persecution. 

In addition to speaking at Biola’s commencement, Baroness Cox received Biola University’s Chuck Colson Award for Conviction and Courage. Recipients of the award are individuals who demonstrate commitment to the unshakable truths of a biblical worldview, as well as a willingness to act on biblical convictions, however risky or challenging it may be.

“Through her words and actions in the House of Lords, Christian Solidarity Worldwide and the Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust, Baroness Cox has been a bold voice for the voiceless, bringing aid and attention to the marginalized, oppressed and persecuted peoples of the world,” said Biola University president Barry H. Corey. 

Baroness Cox is also a founder of MERLIN (Medical Emergency Relief International). Her work takes her on many missions to conflict and post-conflict zones, including South Sudan and North Korea. She has also written numerous books and has been honored with the Commander Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland, the Wilberforce Award, the International Mother Teresa Award from the All India Christian Council, as well as many other accolades.

Corey shakes hands with every graduate when they cross the stage to receive their diploma, however, he and his oldest son, Anders Corey, gave the crowd at Friday night's commencement a surprise when he crossed the stage. The two reenacted the famous "Parent Trap" handshake when Anders went to shake his father's hand. ABC7 News heard about the surprise and covered the story. Watch the news segment below.
