Biola University is one of the nation’s 86 best colleges to work for, according to a newly released survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education. Biola was also recognized as a 2015 Honor Roll school — a distinction given to institutions grouped by enrollment size cited most often across all recognition categories.

The results put Biola among 42 colleges in the nation — including just five schools in California and two schools in the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities — to make the Honor Roll. In 2012, the first year Biola participated in The Chronicle’s survey, the university was also named an Honor Roll school.

The results, released today in The Chronicle’s eighth annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a survey of 281 colleges and universities. Biola was recognized for excelling in the following nine categories:

  • Teaching environment
  • Compensation and benefits
  • Job satisfaction
  • Work/life balance
  • Confidence in senior leadership
  • Respect and appreciation
  • Tenure clarity and process
  • Facilities, workspace and security
  • Supervisor/department chair relationship

“The institutions that the Great Colleges program recognizes provide innovative educational experiences — while also offering their employees outstanding workplace experiences — and we are eager to help readers learn more about them,” said Liz McMillen, The Chronicle’s editor.

In all, only 86 of the 281 institutions achieved “Great College to Work For” recognition for specific best practices and policies.

“Biola University is a great place to work for a number of reasons, but chiefly because at Biola, faculty, staff and students not only develop skills and excel professionally, but they grow together and flourish in the pursuit of Christ,” said President Barry Corey.

The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback.

Results are reported for small, medium and large institutions, with Biola University included among the medium universities with 3,000 to 9,999 students.

In 2013, Biola was also recognized as one of 97 “Great Colleges to Work for.” In 2012, Biola was recognized as one of 103 “Great Colleges to Work For” in addition to being named an Honor Roll school.
