On September 16, 2016, members of the symphony orchestra at Biola University’s Conservatory of Music had the opportunity to perform with The Brilliance, a contemporary Christian band. The performance was a part of the “Love and Humility in Politics,” sponsored by the Biola University Center for Christian Thought.

The concert proved to be a unique learning experience for orchestra students, particularly because they were given the music for the concert the night before the event — resulting in limited rehearsal time with the band. In addition to this, some of the songs the band played were brand new, and freshly written orchestra parts were given to the musicians minutes before the event.

This type of creativity is consistent with the band’s reputation — known for their convicting lyrics and contemplative sound, The Brilliance are respected by many for their boldness in approaching difficult topics through their music.

Members of the orchestra came away from the experience feeling stretched and encouraged, both musically and spiritually. Many students expressed their gratitude for being able to help lead worship with the band and perform a style of music outside the classical genre.

“I can’t put into words how much I appreciate the opportunity to play with such world-class musicians,” said Sarabeth Mullins, a student at Biola University.

The concert was not the only way students got to interact with The Brilliance. Band members took time to offer orchestra members advice about how to succeed in the music industry, encouraging them to practice excellence in order to honor God.
