LA MIRADA, CALIF. — The Biola University Torrey Honors College has launched a new partnership with the University of Oxford designed specifically for Torrey Honors students to live a semester abroad among the rich Christian community and faculty at Wycliffe Hall. A maximum of 12 students will be selected to participate in the highly competitive program for each fall and spring semesters to earn Torrey Honors course credits while learning from Oxford professors and experiencing the beautiful, historical landscape of the United Kingdom.
"The Torrey Oxford program is a mutually beneficial program for both the Torrey Honors College and Wycliffe Hall, Oxford,” said Dr. Greg Peters, professor in the Torrey Honors College and director of the Torrey Oxford program. “Torrey students will benefit from spending a semester in Oxford, a crown jewel among the world's universities, with access to the riches of one of the world's oldest universities and the expertise of Wycliffe Hall tutors. Wycliffe Hall receives the benefit of a group of eager Torrey students, grounded in the great books tradition, who want to deepen their knowledge of the classics, theology and philosophy while investigating its relevance for life in the world today."
Peters has been appointed as visiting scholar with Wycliffe Hall, University of Oxford and will be the Biola Torrey faculty member at Oxford teaching students. Torrey Oxford students will also be taught by other evangelical Christian professors at Wycliffe Hall for specialized one-on-one tutorials in philosophy, theology and religion. The intensive studies will provide students with invaluable skills in research and scholarship to prepare them for future academic work and graduate school.
As official registered visiting students, Torrey Oxford students will also experience benefits such as dorm life with other Oxford students, access to the university’s historic Bodleian Library as well as Oxford’s Evangelical Permanent Private Halls, where they will be living and growing among the intellectual and communal fellowship of international Christian scholars.
Torrey Oxford is the only study abroad opportunity that will allow students to substitute 13 honors course credits — nine gained from studies at Wycliffe Hall and the remaining four from a resident Torrey Honors faculty member at Oxford. By the end of the semester, Torrey Oxford students will receive a University of Oxford transcript for their Oxford courses, supplementing their academic portfolio.
