Overview
Does the process of teaching English vocabulary to speakers of other languages seem daunting to you? Through a series of four short lessons, this course articulates the essential principles of English vocabulary, which are foundational for teaching vocabulary. As you work through various activities in this course, you will learn to apply the knowledge gained to implement your own teaching vocabulary lessons.
At the end of this course, learners will:
1. Understand the relevance of vocabulary in English language teaching
2. Understand what English vocabulary is, and identify the words to teach
3. Recognize important aspects of English learning
4. Gain the confidence to implement vocabulary teaching principles
Teaching Vocabulary is part of a series of courses that make up the TESOL Certificate, designed to equip learners with the essentials of teaching the English language, often in an informal, non-academic setting. This course can be taken individually or as a part of the Professional Certificate.

About the Course Author
Michael Lessard-Clouston aims to help equip students for a variety of careers that address language-related issues. Before coming to Biola in 2005, he served for 10.5 years as a professor of English and Language Education at Kwansei Gakuin University in Nishinomiya, Japan. His doctoral work was on second language education and literacy, and he is on the review boards for the Japan Journal of Multilingualism and Multiculturalism and TESL Canada Journal. Lessard-Clouston was founding editor of the International Journal of Christianity and English Language Teaching. He taught for two months at Universitas Pelita Harapan, in Karawaci, Indonesia, and enjoys music, Sunday afternoons, traveling and reading.

Since the TESOL courses are self-paced, you will have no interaction with the professor(s). However, if you are planning to submit your course assignments to obtain the TESOL Certificate, we recommend that you save all your work in one document, which will be submitted at the beginning of the Capstone course. At that point, a professor in the TESOL department will evaluate your work and provide feedback.
