LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Westmont has long been known as the cream of the crop among Golden State Athletic Conference schools when it comes to work in the classroom, but with the most recent GSAC scholar-athlete release it seems tides are changing.
Huge numbers of scholar-athletes, especially from men and women's track and field, helped Biola supplant the Warriors at the top of the academic race in the conference. The Eagles led the GSAC with 27 scholar-athletes between track and field and baseball, softball and men and women's tennis.
Concordia had the second-most with 12, then Westmont's 11 and Vanguard's 10. The Master's College, Arizona Christian, San Diego Christian and Hope International combined for 13 scholar-athlete nods.
Biola's long list of scholars is highlighted by eight All-GSAC athletes: Alex Calkins, Mark Diaz, Boone Farrington, Whitney Fredenburg, Danny Ledesma, Taylor McCahon, Alexandra Sciarra and Peter Stacy.
Biola's lead in spring season scholar-athletes is not inconsistent with what it has done all season long. The Eagles' 52 scholar-athlete nods in the 2013-14 athletic season nearly double any other GSAC school's total. Westmont is second with 28 total honors.
