You are invited to the School of Science, Technology and Health Speaker Series. Distinguished industry leaders will be sharing with the Biola community their diverse professional and personal insights. This event is free and open to all.
We will be featuring a speaker for annual Rosa Lecture Speaker Series. All are welcome!
This year's speaker is Dr. Livia Eberlin. Dr. Livia Eberlin is an accomplished scientist and inventor in the Division of Surgical Oncology at Baylor College of Medicine. Her Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at Purdue University and postdoctoral research at Stanford University focused on cutting-edge applications of mass spectrometry, positioning her to make revolutionary contributions to diagnostic medicine and surgical oncology. She is co-inventor of the MasSpec Pen, which is saving lives by dramatically reducing the time it takes to distinguish cancerous tissue from non-cancerous tissue during surgery. Her ingenuity earned her a place on the Forbes 30 under 30 listing in Healthcare.
Talk Title: The Pen That’s Revolutionizing Cancer Surgery, and How It Came to Be
Talk Description: In this talk, Dr. Eberlin will describe her journey developing the MasSpec Pen technology and translating it to clinical practice. Featured in Grey’s Anatomy, this life-saving device is now used in surgical practice around the world. The Pen provides real-time molecular information to guide surgeons during tissue resection. There’s a personal side to the story as well. She will talk about the ups and downs of her experience breaking through barriers in medical research to bring a transformative idea from blackboard to prototype to commercial product.
